The interesting history and heritage of Ardross were researched and explored in the autumn of 2021. The shared memories and legends remembered by Ardross residents and those who had lived and worked in Ardross were used to compile a history of Ardross; steered and guided by Archaeology for Communities in the Highlands [ARCH] in a series of classes.
The classes focussed on the Ardross Community Council area. Some of the evidence of the past is still there today, but much has been altered or destroyed.
Ardross has a long history of human settlement: cupmarked stones from 3,500 BCE; chambered cairns; the famous Pictish stones including the Wolfstone; an insurrection in the “Year of the Sheep” - “Bliahna nan Caorach” at the begining of the Highland Clearances; forward thinking landowners of the 19th Century. Ardross still has a strong and clear identity today.
The following pages are an online record of the display, which tours Easter Ross with thanks to all those involved. The display illustrates some of the more important sites, buildings and finds from the area. Further information about these and many other sites and memories of our heritage can be found in binders at the Alness Heritage Centre or Alness Library as well as on the Highland Historic Environment Record
Funding was provided by ARCH as well as the Ardross Community Council and Historic Environment Scotland.
