Ardross History

1.      Stittenham Chambered Cairn

These stones are the remains of a burial tomb dating around 5,000 years ago. When complete, it would have had two chambers with a corbelled roof, covered with small stones. Bodies and parts of bodies for a large number of people would have been deposited, perhaps members of a community or extended family, along with gravegoods. A small cluster of such tombs are known from the Ardross area, although all were more or less destroyed by the 20th century. These sites together with finds of stone axeheads and flint knives show that the area was settled in the Neolithic period.
