5. Pictish Stones
Three carved stones with animals and abstract symbols were found in the area. The top two were built into a dyke at Stittenham, and the one below ploughed up in a field at Dalnavie. They were carved by Pictish craftspeople probably between AD 400 and 800. Other evidence of Pictish settlements, burials and carvings survive in Easter Ross, including the excavated monastery at Portmahomack, but there are no dated remains in the Ardross area.
